Chicago White Sox Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on an Lucrative Multi-Million Dollar Contract.

In a notable move for their retooling roster, the American League club have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract bringing in the accomplished player.

Financial Terms and Added Benefits

The deal features a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to compensation of sixteen million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for winning the MVP award.
  • $500K for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for placing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for earning the Rookie of the Year honor.

The agreement provides that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the deal. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows get a supplemental fee of any triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese-born to suit up for the South Siders, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, enters a young core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a difficult season, placing last in the AL Central but showing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.

Having earned Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, eclipsing the all-time record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with fanning 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. Initially playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off two-base hit that brought home teammates for a come-from-behind one-run win. The following day in the final against the USA, he hit a game-tying home run in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's subsequent title triumph.
