Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews entered the residence in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were arrested at the scene and another man who ran away subsequent to the explosion was located shortly later. The trio have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene showed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had happened on a floor above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed reporters, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
