Italian Consumer Group Criticizes Ski Pass Cost Increases as Completely Unjustified

Italian consumer advocates are sounding the alarm over what they describe as entirely unreasonable cost hikes for lift tickets this winter season, cautioning that skiing could become an exclusive privilege for the wealthy.

Substantial Price Increases Throughout the Country

Across the Alpine regions and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the slopes of Abruzzo, prices are set to rise by up to 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.

The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now set visitors back €86 per day during the current winter. In Roccaraso, a daily ski pass is expected to reach €60, after experiencing substantial visitor surges during the previous winter.

Seasonal Pass Costs and Additional Expenses

Meanwhile, seasonal ski passes will range from €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to upwards of €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.

The expense of hiring winter sports gear has similarly risen, along with lodging costs and dining expenses throughout alpine destinations.

Consumer Group President Points to Unreasonable Hikes

The consumer association president, heading the watchdog organization, emphasized that the cost rises—attributed by resorts to increased utility expenses, facility upkeep, and demand for better equipment—were entirely unreasonable and not acceptable.

"Both because Italian inflation rates are managed effectively and utility costs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," Melluso noted.

The president further stated that prices have now reached levels where budget-conscious visitors are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, completely.

Tourism Decline and Broader Context

He noted a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the 2024-2025 season, with a million fewer domestic visitors visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to rising costs.

Despite these increases, Italy remains a cheaper option for winter sports fans in the European region compared to nearby Swiss resorts, France, and Austrian locations.

Olympic Context

The growing concern over skiing costs comes as the nation gets ready to host the 2026 Winter Games between February 6 and 22. The nation's top diplomat, the foreign affairs official, announced on Friday that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "global truce" during the global competition.

"Through the Winter Games we must similarly convey a peaceful communication and conversation... to stop warfare during the Games," he declared.
