Around 2,500 police forces were involved in Tuesday's operation

Intense confrontations broke out when around 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with shooting, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives stated.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated at least 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Local Reaction

Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Access ways continue shut across the area.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement stated more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the mission, in addition to dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by civil and military police was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are believed to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in Brazil ahead of important worldwide conferences in the South American nation.

The UN climate summit COP30 is scheduled in the northern urban center in the eleventh month.
