Offspring of Previous South African President Jacob Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Charges as Court Case Starts
The daughter of previous South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related charges at the start of her court case in the port city of Durban.
The defendant, 43, is being charged over comments she made on digital networks several years back during fatal unrest in South Africa that came after the detention of her father.
A seven-day period of chaos in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including looting and fire-setting, caused at least 300 individuals killed and led to damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (2.2 billion pounds).
She has been accused of inciting this unrest and faces charges of provocation to commit terror-related activities and public violence.
History of the Legal Matter
The demonstrations were concentrated in the regions of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the former president's arrest for defying a judicial ruling to testify at an probe into claims of graft while he was serving as president.
The defendant has repeatedly denied the charges against her, with her attorney earlier calling the prosecution's legal argument as insufficient.
She has also consistently claimed the charges against her were an bid to resolve political scores with her parent after he started his own political party and ran against the African National Congress.
Backing and Case Arguments
This was reinforced by the foundation, which stated the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and kinship targeting" against the ex-leader and his family.
A small number of backers from her political organization, her party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other party leaders were present at the court sessions inside.
The defense has stated that the testimony presented by the state is inadequate and does not have substantial proof for a guilty verdict.
Central Elements of the Case
