Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club history in a key European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official senior international match.
He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team chase future success.
Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said after the win at Manchester.
